We were recently contacted by one of our cherished Stannites—now 94 years old—who began her journey at Windermere School (then St Anne’s) during the Second World War. Her words are a powerful reminder of our school’s long-standing role as a place of safety, learning and lasting happiness:
“In 1940, a land mine exploded opposite our house, and my parents decided it was time for me to be educated in more peaceful surroundings. I wasn’t happy in my day school—but I was so very happy at St Anne’s. I started at Elleray in 1940 and left Browhead in 1949. I loved the Lakes, and I’m quite envious of the pupils today—they seem to have a wonderful education and life!”
As we continue to shape the future of Windermere School, we remain inspired by the generations who came before—whose stories and spirit still shape our community today.
