Following our recent article about the visit of Susan and Michael Fox, we were delighted to receive a message from another former pupil whose own memories of school life stretch back more than 85 years.
The article immediately struck a chord, as Susan's mother, Patricia Maloney, served as Matron at Elleray during the late 1930s and early 1940s. For this former pupil, Matron Maloney was a familiar and caring figure who helped look after her when she arrived at the school in May 1940 at just five years old.
In her message, she fondly recalled being "the youngest boarding pupil to have gone to St Anne's" and remembered Miss Gibbs, who was Head at the time. Reading about the Fox family's connection to the school brought a flood of memories rushing back.
Alongside her message, she shared a precious school photograph taken in June 1940. In the image, she can be seen seated fourth from the left in the front row, while her sister Sheila appears sixth from the left in the second row. The photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into life at Elleray during a significant moment in history and serves as a valuable addition to our growing archive.
What makes stories like this so special is the way they connect generations of Stannites. A recent visit by one family has led to memories being rekindled, photographs being rediscovered, and friendships and connections being celebrated more than eight decades later.
We are incredibly grateful to all those who continue to share their memories, photographs and stories with us. Every contribution helps preserve the rich history of Windermere School and ensures that future generations can learn about the people who shaped our community.
